I am interested in molecular phylogeny and molecular barcoding of Turkish orchids. Turkey has probably the richest orchid flora in the Mediterranean with almost 190 taxa, yet greatly threatened by “salep” collection, over – grazing and habitat loss. Therefore, there is an urgent need to design modern conservation strategies as possible to make it use in the protection of this thrilling plant group.
Orchids are the most evolved group of flowering plants with 25.000 taxa and more than 10.000 hybrids among world. Floral characteristics are highly important for taxonomy studies. Having short fragment sequences of DNA, provide us invaluable information about taxonomy and the evolutionary history of orchids.
My main goal is generating a National Barcode Database of Turkish orchids to use it for revealing and conserving the natural orchid diversity of Turkey.
